Redditt Farrier Service

Asheville  and western NC
Every hoof...balanced, fit, and finished.

We have an unusually high success rate with chronic
and acute laminitis or founder cases.
With those cases we've studied and employ Gene Ovineck's
Natural Balance therapeutic system,
and readily use Natural Balance products
on sound horses, upon request
.

An experienced, professional, and reliable farrier
accepting new clientele.  We have relocated from
White House, TN to Clyde, NC.  An accident in May
'06 broke my L leg.
I placed and excellent group of
long time customers with other farriers, without a
lapse in their regular, scheduled service that I provide
and manage, when requested.  Manage, means I'll
schedule them six weeks in advance.  I'll call you with
the amount of notice that you'd like, to remind you of
their due date and let you know when to have them up.
This system keeps your horses "minute man" ready.
Service of that caliber, my constant study, and the skill
of my hands make Redditt Farrier Service the choice for
those in the market for a farrier.
I could possibly work some during the Fall of '07,
I believe it would be most wise to wait until the Spring '08.

"Shoe for Soundness" Dr. Doug Butler    That was my mind set before I read it published by Dr. Butler.  I'd have added "lifetime "  between for and soundness.  Professional hoof capsule management should result in a picturesque hoof, given the horses' enviromental
circumstances.  Each shoeing is a prescription, it is tailored to the one horse, his environment and use.  A hoof capsule, specifically the shape of the hoof, affects each joint and muscle well into the torso. A distorted hoof can cause permanent damage to any of the bony structures above it, over time.
Maintaining a hoof that will allow a horse to be useful for 90 some%, of his life span, demands care by a farrier with the health of the horse at top of his list.
That goal is accomplished by professional farriery.  That is shoeing, if necessary, that doesn't  interfere with the natural function of the hoof.  Shoeing must allow expansion and contraction, while controlling wear. When the above goals are met, uninhibited flexion and extension should occur in all the joints above.

Factors Affecting the Hoof Capsule
The shape of the hoof capsule is first influenced by coffin bone shape, then by  skeletal conformation, metabolism with infirmities factored in, and body weight. Next are external factors, i.e., regular & timely hoof care, ground surface in pasture or paddock, and usage. These examples are not all inclusive, but I believe they are in order of importance.

There are at least six aspects of balance for each foot. Dr. Doug Butler labels them X, Y, Z, and the X, Y, & Z effects on dynamic or functional balance.
X balance is often referred to as medial / lateral. Y balance is looking at the hoof from above or below. Is the growing hoof, wearing as it should, symmetrically? Finally Z balance is also referred to anterior / posterior, or heel and toe balance. Most persons don’t think past heel height, and strain on the flexor tendons. Those overlooked are the extensor tendons on the front of each leg. Any effect on a flexor or extensor tendon, conversely affects the other.

Cutters aren't my exclusive customer group. Experience with:
  • dressage
  • draft horses- occasionally
  • Walking/saddle horses-keg, and plantation shoes.  I have abandoned the study on padded shoeing.
  • Icelandics
  • Paso Finos
  • team ropers
  • calf ropers
  • barrel horses
  • mules-gaited and trotting
  • hunters
  • western pleasure- Congress level
  • Laminitic horses   (Precursor to founder)
  • Natural Balance Farrier, primarily in theraputic cases.  I have consistently restored soundness from 12 degree + rotation or upward displacement of the hoof capsule. (There has been a change in terminology, not the disease.)  I am experienced in the treatment of acute laminitis.  That treatment is preventing long-term damage by stopping capsular rotation, including sinking of the entire bony column, after initial damage to the sensitive laminae holding the bony column to the inside of the hoof wall.
  • I'm experienced and comfortable capturing and usng radiographs for  precision application of the Natural Balance protocol for chronically as well as acute laminitic horses.
